An Aged Mediterranean Ambience belies the modern amenities in this South Orange kitchen, which was just what the homeowners — both of them gourmet cooks — ordered. They told their project team, made up of a kitchen designer, a builder, an architect, and an interior designer, to keep the integrity of their home's Tudor architecture while losing the dated, cramped kitchen. In its place, they envisioned a functional, professional style kitchen for family gatherings and entertaining. Specific requests called for more countertop space with an island, a professional cooktop, and double wall ovens. The clients — a national magazine publisher and a writer — also wanted a niche for a built-in computer desk plus shelving and cabinetry for storing paperwork and reference materials.

THE OFFICE AREA (below left) was a must for the homeowners, a professional writer and a publisher. Opposite the workstation area is the window seat (below right) with storage drawers. This space originally was a screened porch with a brick floor (see "Before" inset below).
